  15.  Hi, I need some help regarding attaching a modem to an IRIS
  16.  workstation. We have a SG Iris workstation, that is not on the
  17.  internet.  We are trying to attach a modem (telebit trailblazer)
  18.  to it.  The software we are using for dialing is /usr/etc/slip.
  19.  
  20.  As given in the manuals, I have changed the /usr/lib/uucp/Systems,
  21.  /usr/lib/uucp/Devices and /usr/lib/uucp/Dialcodes files.  The changes
  22.  basically indicate that a modem is attached to the computer at a
  23.  specific port, and they also gives the dialing number, the hostname
  24.  at the other end to login after successful dialing.

  26.  The problems I have right now are :

  28.    The computer can identify the device, but it cannot dial.  There
  29.    are no errors that come up when I try to dial.  To debug, I used
  30.    the following. (cu is similar to the tip on SUN workstations)

  32.      cu -s 9600 -l /dev/ttym2  -- This comes out proplerly, and the
  33.                                   computer can identify the device,
  34.                                   ttym2.

  36.      cu -d remote-host         -- Comes out correctly and there are
  37.                                   no errors.

  39.      /usr/etc/slip -cp comp -r remotehost. -- This just hangs.  It is
  40.                                               supposed to dial the
  41.                                               number given in the
  42.                                               above mentioned files
  43.                                               (or atleast that is my
  44.                                               understanding).

  46.   Can you please tell me :

  48.     1.  Where am I making a mistake, and what is the reason for not
  49.         dialing ?

  51.     2.  Why are there no error messages atleast ?
  52.  
  53.     3.  How can I read/change the modem configuration ?  Slip does not
  54.         seem to have any way to access/change the modem setup.  Is
  55.         there something else that does it ? We did not buy any other
  56.         software assuming slip does what is required.

  58.     4.  What is a good source to know of slip on Iris apart from the
  59.     manual pages ?
