  12. I am looking for information regarding the construction of an index
  13. using latex.  I have read about the subject in Lamport's user's guide
  14. and I understand the parts about generating the *.idx file and
  15. generating the index at the end of my file.  I am looking for a way of
  16. getting from the .idx file to the sorted list of index \item entries,
  17. or some other means of automating the process --- there *has* to be a
  18. better way than doing it by hand, like the book suggests.  I have
  19. found an undocumented executable called texindex; nobody seems to know
  20. what it is for, and I can't figure out by trial and error what it is
  21. supposed to do.
