  11. I'm new to the world of TeX, and I was trying to use the \font
  12. control word in the following way:

  14. \font\mike1 = cmr10
  15.  
  16. and TeX returned the following error:
  17.  
  18. ! Font \mike=1 not loadable: Metric (TFM) file not found.
  19.  
  20. HOWEVER, when I changed the line to:
  21.  
  22. \font\mikea = cmr10
  23.  
  24. everything worked. Why is "mikea" valid and "mike1" not valid?
  25. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.
