- Hello Super-Users and Administrators and Operators,
-
- we have here discussions about the replacement of our VP-100, so I would
- like to here some opinions about the relation of
-
- Brutto speed ( Mflops ) to
-
- main memory size and
-
- IO-rate
-
- one should have.
-
- The machine should have a brutto power of appr. 1 Gflop. We are a university
- with mostly technical sciences, so more than half ( perhaps 60-80 % ) will
- go to such applications. We have appr. 1500 scientists, appr. 10000 students,
- ( who will of coarse use this machine for the final thesises only, if at all ).
-
- The machine will run under some flavour of Unix, interactive use will happen
- at least for development.
-
- How will access via X-terminals affect the configuration of the machine ?
-
- How can a high speed DRAM 'disk' be traded against main memory ?
- ( many supers have such a storage behind main memory for fast swapping etc.)
-
- How important or unimportant would you consider the existance of virtual
- memory ? How would this influence the IO-rate needed ? the size of main
- memory ?
-
- Thanks a lot for all responses to the group or by mail, i'll summarize
- if I get useful responses.
