- I've been using a SunCD for over a year now without problems and now
- it is exhibiting intermittent hardware errors. These manifest themselves
- with an error message (when things go well) or a system lockup (when it is
- nasty). I'm using a Sun SLC running 4.1.2. The SCSI chain has the following
- devices: SunCD, two disks and a terminated QIC tape drive.
-
- Examples of error messages which it reports are:
- vmunix: sr0: disk not responding to selection
- vmunix: sr0: Unit not Ready. Additional sense code 40
-
- vmunix: esp0: Disconnected command timeout for Target 3 Lun 0
- vmunix: sd0: SCSI transport failed: reason 'timeout': retrying command
-
- vmunix: esp0: Spurious data in phase from target 2
-
- vmunix: sd2: SCSI transport failed: reason 'reset': retrying command
-
- vmunix: sr0: Error for command 'read'
- vmunix: Error Level: Fatal Block: 112
- vmunix: Sense Key: Hardware Error
- vmunix: Additional Sense key: 0x9
- vmunix: Vendor 'Sony' unique error code: 0x9
-
- vmunix: sr0: Unit not Ready. Additional sense code 87

- If it doesn't panic I can usually fix it by ejecting the CD and inserting it
- again or by twiddling the SCSI cables at the rear of the unit. I have
- disconnected the cables, cleaned the connectors, cleaned the fan, and the
- inside. As the SCSI cables are thick and relatively inflexible, I feel that
- there is quite some pressure on the female connectors. Could this be the
- problem? It looks like a loose contact somewhere. Has anyone noticed this
- before?
-
- Any help would be appreciated.
