  13. As far as I know, growing dim is normal as the CRT approaches the 
  14. end of its life cycle, due to some physical aging effect.
  15. For a lot of display units, the brightness may be adjusted,
  16. increasing the lifetime of the unit.

  18. In case of problems with authorized service, adjustment of the
  19. SLC (and stand-alone 17SMM1 display units) is straightforward
  20. for people with some hardware experience.
  21. The procedure is
  22.  
  23. 1) Power off (remove cord) and NEVER ON AGAIN during the 
  24.    procedure
  25. 2) Remove 4 screws fastening the back cover. Pull the cover 
  26.    backwards.
  27. 3) Remove all screws on the inner top metal grid. Flip back
  28.    edge (slowly and carefully) upwards until the potmeter R158 on 
  29.    the main board can be reached by a screwdriver
  30. 4) Adjust the potmeter (slowly and carefully) fully clockwise
  31. 5) Remount parts by reversing steps 1)-3)
  32. 6) Turn the machine/monitor on and readjust brightness using
  33.    external adjustment wheel
