- I am considering upgrading a 4D/340VGX to Reality Engine graphics.
- I've been told by a sales rep that the product is called HU-REALTT.
- What exactly do I get with this upgrade?
-
- I assume you'd get a fabulous Reality Engine. Just a small warning. We
- have a 340VGX twin tower, and our sales guy said it would just be a
- board swap. The RE arrived middle of December, when we learn, "Oh No,
- Mr. Bill", the RE only fits in the single tower. We are now in rather
- unpleasant discussions, since the upgrade price is higher for twin
- tower (I guess they have to replace the whole machine) about who
- should pay the difference. (and of course our 1992 money is now history).
- SGI's quote just say "RealityEngine graphics upgrade for IRIS
- PowerSeries and IRIS Crimson deskside systems", but I guess there are
- different part numbers for single vs. twin tower upgrades, so make
- sure your sales person gets you the right one.
-
- This is of course, just my perspective on a most depressing situation,
- as everytime I pass by the box full of RE parts, I hear it saying "You
- could be doing full screen antialiasing. You could be doing realtime
- textures in quantity and quality like you've never could do on the VGX.
- FEED ME GL INSTRUCTIONS NOW." (music from "Little House of Graphics Horrors",
- comes up).
