- Recently--while trying to track down a strange problem with an on-line
- policy program I got from the net, then later when setting up BSD
- quotas--I discovered a behaviour from the toolchest that I can only call
- a bug.
-
- The problem has to do with messages that are supposed to be delivered to
- the user at *login* time (not when *each* shell is started, just the
- *first* shell). The bug is that when the toolchest is invoked it seems
- to *eat* any output from the login process (xdm in the case of IRIX
- 4.0.5). This means that the message about quota violation is *never*
- seen by anyone logging in to the console; only when the user logs in
- over the network (or from a character-based terminal, if one was
- attached).
-
- I have RTFM about X, xdm, etc., and find no indication of how to get
- these login messages to be presented to the user.
- /usr/lib/X11/xdm/Xsession claims that all messages from xdm and
- toolchest will be routed to the console, but this does not appear to
- work as claimed.
-
- Can anyone at SGI who is familiar with the SGI X software tell me how I
- go about getting "at login time" messages displayed under X/pandora/xdm?
- Please direct your reply to me via email (as well as the net, if you
- like).
