  13. Recently--while trying to track down a strange problem with an on-line
  14. policy program I got from the net, then later when setting up BSD
  15. quotas--I discovered a behaviour from the toolchest that I can only call
  16. a bug.

  18. The problem has to do with messages that are supposed to be delivered to
  19. the user at *login* time (not when *each* shell is started, just the
  20. *first* shell).  The bug is that when the toolchest is invoked it seems
  21. to *eat* any output from the login process (xdm in the case of IRIX
  22. 4.0.5).  This means that the message about quota violation is *never*
  23. seen by anyone logging in to the console; only when the user logs in
  24. over the network (or from a character-based terminal, if one was
  25. attached).

  27. I have RTFM about X, xdm, etc., and find no indication of how to get
  28. these login messages to be presented to the user.
  29. /usr/lib/X11/xdm/Xsession claims that all messages from xdm and
  30. toolchest will be routed to the console, but this does not appear to
  31. work as claimed.

  33. Can anyone at SGI who is familiar with the SGI X software tell me how I
  34. go about getting "at login time" messages displayed under X/pandora/xdm?
