- Being one of the authors of NetVisualyzer (a minor one but an author
- none the less), I can tell you that it is quite "usable". It has a set
- of tools that can show you just which hosts on you network contribute
- how much of what kind of traffic. It can show you this in real-time
- graphically, or give you summary reports over any time interval that you
- want. Its banner tool, netlook, dynamically draws the topology of you
- network(s) based on packets it sees and then shows you traffic between
- hosts as color-coded lines.
- You can use its extremely powerful filtering capabilities to tell
- the tools just what type packets you want to capture and measure based
- on things such as protocol, values in protocol headers, sources and
- destinations, routed or not, ...Almost anything that you can think of.

- Spectrum is a full-blown network management system and developemnt
- platform. It is sold and supported by Cabletron Systems. However, we at
- SGI work closely with them. Spectrum allows you to look at and control
- the actual configuration of all the devices on the network. With it you
- can map the physical topology of your network, monitor your companies
- organization, assign trouble tickets, keep track of physical location
- of your network devices, etc. It gives you the internal configuration
- and performance of each of your networking devices. Most of this
- information is based on based on SNMP queries. It is a development
- platform in that it allows you to add new applications and device types
- to be managed. NetVisualyzer on the other hand concentrates on network
- traffic monitoring, data gathering, and real-time visualization. It is
- a closed set of tools. However the two products are lightly, but
- effectively integrated.
-
- I believe that the base Spectrum price is approximately $20,000.
- NetVisualyzer in its totality is $3995 list.
