  25. Uhm.... Not really. 44Kbyte/s is 3% of the *theoretic* maximum
  26. bandwidth, and about 10-15% of the actual maximum bandwidth (going
  27. through UDP, etc). To make matters worse, CD output is not
  28. 44.1Kbyte/second but 44.1*(2 channels)*(2 bytes)/second, for a grand
  29. total of 176.4Kbyte/second, about half the available bandwidth.

  31. Listening to CDs over the network is possible, though, if you don't
  32. mind loosing some quality. I'm now listening to Talking Heads
  33. transmitted at 4Kb/second (mono, 8K samples/second, 4bit ADPCM coding)
  34. and it sounds fine, about AM radio quality. The audio data is actually
  35. broadcast to all interested stations on the net, using our 'radio'
  36. software, so a lot of people can listen while the data is only sent
  37. over the net once.
