- We use inst, almost exclusively. Some of use a slightly hacked version
- that allows interactive installs (even of 'miniroot only' subsystems),
- but most don't (that feature will be in a future released version of
- inst).
-
- Most people do network installs, sometimes from a local host (on the
- same net), sometimes from hosts 3 or 4 routers away (ethernet and/or
- fddi). A few people use CD's or tape.
-
- In some rare cases we use rdist.
-
- It is true that for the current released inst, you have to have
- somebody (system admin, or whoever) walk around and start the inst's,
- but unless they are widely physically seperated, you can do 20-25
- overnight (start them shortly before you go home), and expect them all
- to finish by the morning.
-
- With the newer versions of inst that will be available in the future,
- since you can start them from rsh (in all but the most incompatible
- upgrades), one shouldn't even have to walk around to the systems to
- start the process.
-
- I speak from knowledge as a part time system/network admin, among
- other things.
-
- Finally, in the specific case you cite of new machines, the obvious
- thing to do is what we do in the factory for the systems we ship
- with the O/S installed. Create a master disk with the stuff you want
- on it (including local customizations), and then copy it to all the
- other drives before handing out the systems (there are many ways to
- do that). We do all of our drive copying on SGI systems, usually
- with a system disk, a master disk, and 5 disks being duplicated.
- You can make the system and master be the same in many cases. It doesn't
- take long to make the copies. Of course, we don't have to worry about
- setting /etc/sys_id, or users home dirs and /etc/passwd, but that isn't
- that big a deal to add.
