- Hi,
-
- In the future, please tell me what version of NW4MAC you are using so I can
- taylor my response. I will give you both answers now to make sure the informat-
- ion is complete.
-
- If using NW4MAC v3.x, the name of the volume can be changed using the file
- called VOLNAMES.AFP. This simple text file is located in the SYS:\SYSTEM direct
- ory. Feel free to edit the file with any text editor. Notice by default you
- will see one line of text ---> SYS=<server_name>.SYS. You can change this line
- and add others for other volumes. For example to change the SYS volume name
- to something like "PRIMARY" and a VOL1 to something like "SECONDARY" your file
- would look like this:
-
- SYS=PRIMARY
- VOL1=SECONDARY
-
- After you have edited the file, just UNLOAD then re-LOAD AFP.NLM so the new
- volume names appear on the desktops of your AFP users (Macintoshes).
-
- If using NW4MAC v2.x, the operation is just as easy. Just use MacSetUp to
- "PREPARE A FILE SERVICE GATEWAY." When you have entered the TARGET FILE SERVER,
- you will be asked to supply an ALIAS for the server which will effectivly rename
- your server as it appears on the Macintosh's desktop. You will need to restart
- your 2.x server (to re-load the VAPs) in order for the changes to take affect.
- This solution is not as flexible as the 3.x solution for the following reason.
-
- Notice that with 3.x one can change individual volume names. When using 2.x,
- one does not have this level of flexibility. All one can do is ALIAS the file
- server's name. The FORMAT of the 2.x volume name is unchanged. You will always
- see <FILE_SERVER_NAME>.SYS as the name for the 2.x (VAPs) SYS volume name. So
- to reiterate, all you are changing is the FILE_SERVER_NAME when using the ALIAS
- feature supported with the VAPs. The volumes on that server (in addition to
- the SYS volume) cannot be renamed as they appear on the Macintosh without the
- FILE_SERVER_NAME prefix.
-
- I hope this information helps. I will ask again that in the future you be more
- specific about which products (and versions) you are using so I can be more
- specific in my responses. These descriptions can get REALLY LONG REALLY FAST;-)
-
- Think Peace...
