- Again I have been asked to resolve a NetWare Server problem. This time it
- concerns using COM1 to provide a serial link to a Tek Phaser II PXi.
-
- Any attempt to print results in the printer being declared offline. After
- clearing the offline condition and restarting the print queue, the PCONSOLE
- routine reports that the file is being printed. After approximately 30 or
- 40 seconds, PCONSOLE reports that the printer is offline.
-
- The problem appears to be related to circuit signals that are expected to
- be present on the COM1 interface. The NetWare printer manual does not identify
- what circuit signals are required to be present. The COM1 port has a DB25
- connector and EIA 232 pin assignments are being used. As the printer uses
- XON/XOFF for flow control; only RX data, TX data, and Signal Ground are actually
- used between the printer and the server's COM1 port.
-
- Request to Send is jumpered to Clear to Send at the COM1 connector. Data
- Terminal Ready is jumpered to Data Set Ready and Carrier Detect. This con-
- figuration is normally sufficient under other operating systems to support
- a serial printer.
-
- There are two questions concerning this configuration. Is NetWare expecting
- some other circuit signal to be present? (All circuits except those mention-
- ed are not terminated and, therefore, will float with the state determined
- by "noise" or state assumed by the software.) Is NetWare expecting to see
- state transitions?
-
- As always, any help would be appreciated.
