- |A friend of mine has recently discovered that in the mail directory of
- |his LAN account there is a 2-byte file that updates itself each time
- |he logs in and comes back after he deletes it. The file contains only
- |one Vertical Tabulation symbol (decimal 11, Hex 0B). He asked a few
- |other LAN users and they all found the same file in their mail
- |directories. They suspect that their mail is monitored by the LAN
- |supervisor. Is it possible?
-
- Sure, it's possible. However, not knowing the type of LAN running, what
- email software is in use, or what else is installed on the network, there's
- no way for anyone to come close to giving a definitive answer.
-
- Most likely, it has nothing to do with monitoring. In most cases in which
- monitoring is set up, the purpose is to track someone without their being
- aware of it. Leaving a counter file laying around in someones' mail
- directory would be pretty stupid, and unnecessary. (What would the number
- of logins have to do with email monitoring?)
-
- In any case, email and LANs are not secure; don't put anything in email
- or on a LAN that you want to keep confidential, unless you encrypt it. Of
- course, encrypted email gets you into the realm of export regulations....
