  12. Thank you to all those who tried their best to help me solve my sendmail  
  13. problem ...

  15. The problem: My NeXT began to think it was its own mailhost where it was  
  16. actually a mail client to a Sun mail server ... this led to all sorts of  
  17. problems such as not being able to send email to machines within the same  
  18. domain.

  20. I tore apart the whole /etc directory and NetInfo databases to look for  
  21. any stray entries that might have caused the NeXT to think it was a  
  22. mailhost , but to no avail.

  24. Finally, after feeling sick (I caught a cold on the weekend), tired, and  
  25. defeated, I realized that after I performed the 3.0 upgrade, I went  
  26. through all the network configuration files and databases and cleaned up  
  27. entries in NetInfo that might be "unnecessary" duplicates of NIS. In my  
  28. infinite wisedom, I removed the NetInfo host entry (under /machines) for  
  29. our domain's email server. Conventional wisedom would figure that if the  
  30. NeXT can't find the mailhost info in NI, it would look in the flatfile  
  31. databases which point to NIS where the mailhost can be found ...

  33. But no ... the smart black box decided that if there is no mailhost in NI,  
  34. then the local machine must be the mailhost! Duhhhhhh!!!

  36. Anyways, the solution was pretty straight forward - add the Sun mailhost  
  37. to NI - and everything has been working fine since (touch wood).
