  11. I have placed five `freeware' file conversion applications in the submissions
  12. directory at cs.orst.edu (See note at end for details).
  13. They will generally only be of interest to those of you who either have
  14. Macintoshes as well as a NeXT, or interact a lot with Mac users.
  15.  
  16. These apps are:
  17.  
  18.     Convert MacPaint
  19.         Converts MacPaint documents to .eps files
  20.  
  21.     Convert TEXT
  22.         Converts text files between NeXT and Macintosh text formats
  23.         (thus, preserving `special' characters like bullets, printers
  24.         quotes, etc).
  25.  
  26.     Convert RTF
  27.         Yet another rtf file converter.  I dunno how it compares,
  28.         feature-wise, with the other ones out there.  This will
  29.         convert from Mac to NeXT, or back. Aside from mundane
  30.         character and font name conversion, this will use the
  31.         Convert PICT app, mentioned below, the convert
  32.         embeded PICT images to produce a .rtfd file.
  33.  
  34.     Convert FONT
  35.         Allows one to convert Macintosh *bitmaped* fonts to Type 3
  36.         PostScript fonts (good for keeping your dearly loved PD mac
  37.         fonts (or your specialized linguistic or mathematical) fonts
  38.         usable on the NeXT).  This does NOT produce outlines from the
  39.         bitmaps, but rather builds a PS font that just displays
  40.         bitmaped characters
  41.  
  42.     Convert PICT
  43.         This will convert a file in the Macintosh PICT graphics format
  44.         to an eps file.  It converts essentially all the PICT opcodes,
  45.         not just bitmaps. (info about exactly what it doesn't convert
  46.         fully is in the app's help window)

  48. More details about all of these applications is available in their Help
  49. windows.  (the .README files at cs.orst.edu are very edited versions of
  50. the text in those windows).

  52. All of these have only been used by myself. As a result, I'm calling them
  53. Beta versions, since they can't be said to have gotten a good testing (Use
  54. them with caution! =).  I will try to fix any serious bugs, and after
  55. a couple months post fixed ones.

  57. These are all NeXTSTEP 2.1 applications that I have been developing during
  58. odd moments over the past year.  They have not been used or tested very
  59. extensively under 3.0.

  74. I tried to place these apps on sonata.cc.purdue.edu, but my ftp session
  75. froze/hung after the first put command I issued.  Anyone know what's
  76. wrong? (other's have reported this).

  78. cs.orst.edu broke my connection whenever I tried to transfer a large file
  79. (92K worked, 130K did not).  As a result, I had to uuencode Convert PICT
  80. and split that into two pieces.

  83. post to sonata, and a new pict converter to cs.orst.edu.
