When you edit using Edit (at least under NS 2.1), create a file .editdict
with entries like the following:
a    \\alpha
b    \\beta
c    \\chi
d    \\delta
ep    \\epsilon

....
This will allow you to get the text following the tab by typing the
shortcut and then Escape. The characters before the cursor will be
replaced by the text blocks.
