- Or maybe we all have to realize that archive sites have finite resources just
- like everyone else so some decisions need to be made (by archive submitters,
- not maintainers) about what is archived and what isn't. Are large sound and
- image files really crucial to most folks (they occupy a lot of space relative
- to their probable value IMHO)? Are multiple versions of kermit, etc. really
- needed? Are NeXTSTEP (or I guess it was "NeXTstep" :-) 1.0 sources, binaries,
- etc. still needed by most folks? One look at the submissions directory at
- sonata indicates that a lot of folks just "put" without really thinking about
- these issues. How many submissions have you unpacked that contain unstripped
- executables and backup copies (~) of many of the files? Why aren't submissions
- separated into stripped binaries and source by submitters so those of us with
- extended releases don't need to download large binaries?
-
- I think a lot of the archives' problems are caused by users who don't think
- about what they're doing before submitting. The archive maintainers are
- volunteers who have many other responsibilities and can't be responsible for
- filtering out all the abuses that occur.
