- There's now a fix to the disappearing-files bug that's not nearly as
- drastic as backup/reformat/restore. If you don't have System 7.1, run, don't
- walk, to ftp.apple.com and grab /dts/mac/sys.soft/hdsc/disk-first-aid-7-1.hqx
- from there. Disk First Aid 7.1 is supposed to repair the disappearing-folders
- situation (unlike System 7 Tune-up 1.1.1, which prevents the bug from occurring
- in the first place but does nothing to fix folders that have already been
- messed up before it was installed).

-
- The way I understand it, this bug was also present in at least some
- System 6 versions; System 7 just caused it to occur _much_ more often. So if
- your drive has the disappearing-files symptoms, it's worth trying Disk First
- Aid 7.1, even if you've never run System 7.
-
- BTW, Disk First Aid is about the only System 7.1 piece that's on
- ftp.apple.com. If you know any vaguely-unscrupulous Macintosh developers, the
- latest Apple Developer CD has System 7.1 on it as well; I say "unscrupulous"
- because the license agreement that comes with that disk says that you can only
- use the 7.1 software on it to develop and test the 7.1-compatible programs
- you're working on, and you can't give it away. Thankfully, I can honestly say
- that I'm working on a revolutionary new 7.x product even as I speak. :)
