- Elizabeth,
- You don't mention what system version you are running. This sounds a
- bit like the very serious and real bug in System 7.0.1 and 7.0 that effectively
- hides files. It is fixed in 7.1 or by using the Tuneup from Apple (the correct
- version for this fix is 1.1.1) The process of repair may include doing a
- backup/reformat/restore on the affected drive.
- If that is not a possibility (i.e. if you aren't now and never have run
- an un-tuned 7.0 or 7.0.1) it is possible that you have gotten a similar piece
- of damage from some other source (like a crash at a bad time or a stray cosmic
- ray that got lucky on your hard disk) and you may be able to repair the trouble
- with Disk First Aid (free on the Apple system disks that come with every Mac)
- or Norton Disk Doctor, MacTools Rescue or DiskFix, or any similar program meant
- to verify and fix low-level directory damage. It could concieveably just be as
- simple as rebuilding your desktop, but I doubt it.
