- If you are having trouble installing system software, I still think the
- best way to do the job is:
- (1) Boot off a floppy, extract any resources from your old System file
- that you might want to keep (sounds, fonts, FKEYs, drivers), put them
- somewhere safe then trash the System.
- (2) Now boot off Install 1 and install a fresh System.
- The necessity of trashing the old System file is simply because any non-
- Apple resources in it may well be retained in the new System file by the
- Installer, and these may be incompatible with that new System. As an
- example, I once upgraded a Mac from System 6 to System 7 and it immediately
- crashed halfway through boot-up, before the Finder came up. The cause was
- an old Ethernet driver from the System 6 file which got left behind. It
- took a session with Macsbug and ResEdit to discover that, though, and it
- would have saved me some time if I'd just done what I'd prescribed.
- Also, I find it is NOT a good idea to boot off your internal hard disk with
- extensions off, then use the Install 1 floppy to reinstall on the hard
- disk. More often that not the Installer can still get confused and prompt
- you for more than one disk simultaneously. (Of course this doesn't explain
- why I could NEVER boot off the Install 1 disk for the first three months
- after I bought my LC - it would always just after reaching the desktop. I
- had to boot off an external hard disk whenever I wanted to reinstall the
- system on the internal hard disk. After that initial period, however, the
- Install floppy "magically" rectified itself. I still have no idea what the
- cause was!)
