- The problem was caused by my reformatting the drive. I guess this is some
- sort of timing conflict, but there have been reports that a hard drive
- formatted with 'Sleep' enabled can become corrupt (see John Glendenning's
- posting in comp.sys.mac.apps and .hardware). Gregory Glockner thought
- Processor Cycling might also cause the same glitch.

- I was able to fix this problem by doing a full backup, turning off
- 'Sleep' and 'Processor Cycling' and reformatting the drive. Thank you,
- Gregory, for your response and suggestion.

- For those who don't know, to get the Processor Cycling control click the
- 'OptionsU' button in the 'PowerBook' control panel while holding down the
- option key. If you don't hold down the option key the Cycling option is
- unavailable.

- Thanks to all who replied. Backing up and restoring the disk took close
- to forever, but turned out to be well worth it.
