- Semantic problem. No version of the classic Mac OS (i.e. excluding A/UX) does
- pre-emptive multitasking, which is INCORRECTLY referred to as "true"
- multitasking. All for some time (version 5?) have offered a co-operative
- multitasking capability. This is very similar to how Windows multi-tasks
- Windows applications. In another sense, there techically IS pre-emptive
- multitasking in the for of interrupt tasking, but that is very limited.
-
- The reason I object to the 'true' terminology is that it is a subjective
- judgement. co-op systems can give as much illusion of two things happening at
- once as a pre-emptive, given well-written applications. Neither model gives you
- the reality of two things happening at once. For that you would need multiple
- processors. The problem with Mac multitasking is simply that Apple has done
- such a superb job of maintaining appreciable backward compatibility with old
- programs and old programming techniques, and allowed programmers to be
- chauvinistic about demanding processor time. As a result, a lot of Mac programs
- have 8-year-old code in them that still works, so has never been updated to
- work better with the newer systems. If you want to see Mac multitasking really
- work, try using a late-model word processor while downloading with a late-model
- telecomm program (or even an older one like Zterm that is written to live in a
- multi-tasking environment)
-
- As for the rest of 7.1, it is mainly a rolling in of the Tuneup extensions and
- some of Apple's other extensions plus the addition of enhanced foreign script
- systems (broadly, alternate alphabets and writing systems) As far as I know,
- there is no real enhancement of multitasking operation over a tuned-up 7.0 or
- 7.0.1.
