  19. AppleShare Server 3.0.1 Change History

  21. The following is a description of the bugs that were fixed in AppleShare
  22. Server
  23. 3.0.1.  The bugs are categorized according to the area of the software
  24. in which they occurred.
  25.  
  26. Bugs fixed in AppleShare Print Server 3.0.1
  27. -------------------------------------------
  28.  
  29. %   The AppleShare Print Server previously did not properly handle contiguous
  30.     paper feed on ImageWriter printers.  (Extras <CRs> were issued when
  31.     printing continuously with feed paper through an ImageWriter II.  The
  32.     beginning of each subsequent page started further down on the page.)
  33.  
  34. %   If many Macintosh clients were using the Print Server a lot, the Print
  35.     Server could freeze up.
  36.  
  37. %   If many Apple II clients were spooling to the Print Server, the clients
  38.     that tried to talk to the Print Server, after the ninth client, would
  39.     report problems communicating with the printer.  This problem was in the
  40.     AppleShare Print Server and the Apple II client software.  AppleShare
  41.     Print Server 3.0.1 will continue to work the older Apple II clients, but
  42.     for full robustness and future compatibility it is recommended that users
  43.     upgrade the Apple II client software to version GS/OS 6.0.1 when it
  44.                    becomes available.

  46. %   If the AppleShare Print Server or the AppleShare File Server were running
  47.     under heavy stress, it was possible for the Macintosh to crash or freeze
  48.     up.  This problem was traced back to a version of the AppleTalk driver   
  49.     that incorrectly handled some communications.  Users will need to upgrade
  50. the
  51.     AppleTalk drivers on their server MacintoshUs by using the Network
  52. Software
  53.     Installer version 1.2.3 or greater.

  56. Bugs fixed in AppleShare Admin 3.0.1

  59. %   "Users" folder access privileges incorrectly changed from explicit to
  60.     inherited after the menu item "Verify Apple II Startup Info" was selected.

  62. %   AppleShare 3.0.1 now repairs damaged btree files.  This fix eliminates
  63.     occasional 2.0 to 3.0 upgrade failures.

  65. %   The AppleShare 2.0 to 3.0 upgrade could fail without informing the user.
  66.     An alert is now issued if there is a problem with the upgrade.

  68. %   New code and resources were added to make AppleShare 3.0.1 more
  69. localizable
  70.     on two byte systems.  The localizer can now remove the Apple II "Startup"
  71. menu 
  72.     from the menu bar for countries not supporting Apple II.  The hard coded
  73. "I" 
  74.     character was removed and replaced by a one byte resource.  So
  75.     now "I" can be changed to whatever the localizer specifies.  Additionally,
  76.     a check for bad characters in user, group, or server name is allowed.

  78. %   On System 7.1 the Admin in AppleShare 3.0 could not delete a user or group
  79.     without hanging the machine with the File Server running.  AppleShare
  80. 3.0.1
  81.     Admin is now compatible with System 7.1.  (The details:  Admin 3.0 set the
  82.     server's "Flush AC Cache" bit with btree reserved.  This could potentially
  83.     hang the server, especially under system 7.1.  In 3.0.1, Admin sets the
  84. bit
  85.     and loops until the server clears the bit.)

  87. %   Two problems were fixed in AppleShare 3.0's "Copy Item tooI" feature:
  88.         a)  Copy would terminate with a "file not found" error if it
  89.             encountered an invisible folder at the root of source folder,
  90.         b)  The server could hang during "copy item too"'s exit routine
  91. because
  92.             PBHDelete was called with btree reserved.
  93.  
  94. %   There was an occasional Inherited privileges problem when updating from
  95.     AppleShare 2.0 to 3.0.  Access privileges were sometimes upgraded
  96.     incorrectly using AppleShare 3.0.

  98. %   Selecting the menu item "Compact volume Access Privileges" caused launch
  99.     limit settings to be lost.
  100.  
  101. %   AppleShare 3.0 "Summary of Shared Item Report" did not work correctly.
  102.     The report would sometimes show an incorrect owner and group with
  103.     incorrect privileges.  If you looked at the server itself, the privileges
  104.     were set correctly; it was just that the report that was incorrect.

  106. %   AppleShare 3.0.1 is 7.1 compatible.  However, the Compatibility Checker
  107.     says that AppleShare 3.0.1 is not compatible!

  109. Bugs fixed in AppleShare File Server 3.0.1

  112. %   There were incompatibilities between CE Software (QuickMail 2.5) and
  113.     AppleShare.
  114.  
  115. %   When one client duplicated a large (several Meg) file on the server, other
  116.     clients would hang.  The way CopyFile was handled was changed so that the
  117.     server would better service other requests while doing the CopyFile.
  118.  
  119. %   When you attempted to launch an application on the server and the limit of
  120.     concurrent users for an application was exceeded, an FCB was opened and
  121.     never closed.  The server would not close the file and the file would stay
  122.     open until you shut the server down.

  124. %   There was an AppleShare and Retrospect Remote problem.  If you backed up
  125.     the Users & Groups file, users could no longer log into the server.

  127. %   Cat Search would occasionally trash memory on the client side.

  133. for the new version of the Apple II Setup disk).

  138. There were NO code changes in AppleShare 3.0.1 Workstation from the AppleShare
  139. 3.0 Workstation.

  141. Differences Between System 7.1 and AppleShare 3.0.1 Workstation
  142. ---------------------------------------------------------------

  144. The differences between the System 7.1 Workstation and the AppleShare 3.0.1
  145. Workstation are basically those required for it to run in 2-byte systems with
  146. WorldScript II.  This included fixing a few bugs and handling situations like
  147. 2
  148. byte passwords.  A couple of additional fixes, for weird things like booting
  149. with the AppleShare Workstation in the Extensions folder, removing it, and
  150. trying to use the Chooser, were made.

  152. There are no additional features in System 7.1 AppleShare Workstation.

  154. If a user tries to install the AppleShare 3.0.1 Workstation on a 7.1
  155. system, the system will NOT install the AppleShare 3.0.1 Workstation over the
  156. System 7.1 AppleShare Workstation.
