  19. I just bought StuffIt Deluxe (which includes SpaceSaver).  It is quite
  20. an impressive package.  For the money, it is one of the best pieces of
  21. software I've purchased.

  23. I'm running it on a Mac LCII, 6 Meg, System 7.0.1/TuneUp 1.1.1. with
  24. an 80 Meg hard drive.

  26. SpaceSaver can operate both invisibly or by direct manual control.  In
  27. fact, there are many ways to automatically compress files & folders &
  28. disks.  You can use MagicMenu (a new finder menu) to do the job, or
  29. you can simply flag files & folders with special (user defined) prefix
  30. or suffix on the names.  I've set mine up to compress anything with
  31. (s) on the end.  You can also select items NOT to compress ever (using
  32. similar methods).  What I think is even better is that if I name (or
  33. rename) a file with '.sit' on the end, SpaceSaver automatically
  34. creates a StuffIt archive out it, without loading the StuffIt
  35. application.  Very cool!  Of course, how it handles stuffing and
  36. unstuffing of archives is user configurable as well.

  38. And it is very fast.  I don't have a hot-rod of a Mac, but compression
  39. of a a quarter-meg folder takes but a second or two.  And
  40. decompression of a file or application during open is seemingly
  41. sub-second.  I am getting somewhere between 30% to 40% savings on most
  42. files.

  44. The combination of StuffIt and SpaceSaver make this a great utility.
  45. It is fast, and is as transparent as you choose it to be.  I recommend
  46. it most highly.
