- It seems to me that I've read the the OS for the PowerPC will be
- backwards compatible, to some extent. That is, "well-behaved"
- programs for the Mac will be able to run under the PowerPC, either
- in an emulator mode or through a code-converter that converts
- 68K code to native PowerPC code.
-
- Questions:
- 1. Is the programming interface to the PowerPC OS going
- to remain:
- A. Exactly the same (IM I-VI, NIM 1-15)
- B. Substantialy the same (NIM 1-5,7,11-13, IPPC 1-3)
- IPPC -- Inside PowerPC :-)
- C. Somewhat the same (NIM 11-15, IPPC 1-12)
- D. Now for something completely different (IPPC 1-999)
- 2. Are we going to see:
- A. Demand paged virtual memory
- B. Protected memory
- C. Kernel threading
- D. Pre-emptive multi-tasking
- E. Shared memory segments
- F. Semaphores
- 3. Is everything going to be an after-market "bolt-on"/
-
-
- Basically 1 asks, is my time investment in learning the Mac
- programming interface, MPW scripting, etc, going to be thrown
- out (and me sent out to pasture :-) when we go to the PowerPC?
-
- Anyone in a position to know?
-
- Tom.
