  16.     Hi! I own a one person software company and have been working on
  17. a couple of projects that I plan to market. I have released about 2-3 
  18. shareware programs (Marked "Send a post card or as much cash you think it's
  19. worth") and the responce was reassuring (many postcards, no cash =) that    
  20. programs get around FAST. I didn't u/load anything to any ftp sites yet 
  21. I see the program on some anonymous sites that I frequent.

  23.     My proposal to the following "commercial" projects is to market
  24. them in a similar way. Instead of the program however, I will be sending
  25. out a semi-functional demo. To get a working copy, you simply send a check or 
  26. money order t the designated address.

  28.     The working copy will hold serial numberS (about 150 that I can trace
  29. directly to you and they would be located at various places in the code,
  30. resources etc). Registered users will also have access to a support BBS
  31. (And "guest" access will be available). The BBS offers support and it's 
  32. where you get ugrades and bug fixes. (Upgrades also avail via internet
  33. and having me mail upgrades to you but shipping charges apply).

  35.     Now the big question: I do come across a copy of the program
  36. that has been pirated. Being a small compnay with limited finances
  37. (and lawyer support), fow far can I prosecute(sp?) someone? Would borders
  38. affect the case (I'm up here in Canada) and to what degree?

  40.     Depending on that, I can go about offering a reward for having
  41. someone hand in a pirate copy of the program...

  43.     This is the only way I can think of to fight piracy...No copy 
  44. protection hassles (And *most* copy protections schemes have a crack..
  45. you do not have to have a Phd to figure one out...just a good knowledge
  46. of MacsBugs). The only downside I see with my proposal is having to deal
  47. with the postal service (2-4 weeks deilvery...unless you can just call the 
  48. support BBS OR include an internet address with the enclosed check)
