- When you shoplift, you're preventing the owner of the item that you
- steal from selling it to anybody. When you pirate software, you're
- preventing the owner of the software from selling it to you. It seems
- to me that there is a big difference between these two things - in the
- first case, there's a tangible loss of profit, where in the second
- case, there's only a loss of opportunity, which may be nearly
- valueless, depending on whether or not you would have bought the
- software if you couldn't steal it.
