- If you can't uncompress it on the UNIX end, you can use a Mac program
- called Zippop, available at Sumex. Don't forget to use binary mode when
- transfering the .Z file to your Mac.

-
- Yes they are 2 rival programs, constantly adding features to out-do the
- other. I believe that currently, one of them does decompress the other,
- but I forget which. They are both shareware, so you can downloadd them
- and check for yourself. They also have recently added other features...
- One of them decompresses binhex (.hqx) files, one of them does pure
- binary conversion, etc..
-

-
- The reason is that many people can't download binary files. Binhex format
- converts binary files into ascii format, so that it can be downloaded by
- everybody. This is usually because some people only have a 7-bit
- connection, which can only transfer ascii. (All Mac programs are binary.)

-
- Another UNIX compression scheme is uuencode. There is a Mac program which
- will convert these, I think it's called UULite.

-
- This would be highly unusual, but it could be done. I don't know of any
- Mac utility for .tar files, so I think you have to "un-tar" them on the
- UNIX end before transfering them to a Mac.
