- Both eacj@theory.TC.Cornell.EDU (Julian Vrieslander) and
- streater@unixhub.SLAC.Stanford.EDU (Tim Streater) have posted their
- results from following Apple's sugestion and we either have crashes or
- fonts in the system.
- The most offen reported fonts left in the system file seem to be
- Monico, Geneva, Chicago.
- To restate the logic of my previous post:
- "Though I could not get him [the Apple represenitive I talked to] to admit this
- is a bug in the installer, from the evidence it is QED (progression of logic)
- that there is a bug.
- In this case the QED is a syllogism, which is a general true statement
- followed by a specific true statement and then a conclusion from the the
- two statements, can be used. For example:
- All men are mortal
- Charles Darwin was a man
- Therefore Charles Darwin was mortal
-
- The syllogism in the case of the System 7.1 installer is as follows:
- 1) Bug: a programing error; error in syntax or logic; the program does not
- do what it is supposed to do (Dictionary of Computer Terms 3rd ed.)
- 2) System 7.1 installer can leave fonts in the system file which should not
- be there. (From the Apple represenitive) or hang (Internet postings)
- 3) Therefore there is a bug in the System 7.1 installer."
-
- The logic STILL applies. The Installer is doing things it should not do
- (Leaving fonts in the system file, hanging, not starting up at all)
- and allowing you to install on your start up HD {error in logic; if you
- must boot up from the installer then the installer should halt and
- give a dialog box saying that you MUST startUp from the installer}
-
- I looks like you missed the point; while my EXAMPLE was in error the
- syllogism was and is still valid. There is clearly a bug in the Installer
- no matter how you or Apple want to avoid the syllogism. {The Quatra install
- is another bug: Can't easy install-an error in both syntax and logic}
- Claiming 'pilot error' when there were ways to prevent the installer from
- working on an active system (Installer for 4.0.1, 6.0.3, and 6.0.5) is
- just ignoring the fact that the programers goofed in either sysntax or logic.
