- What you've discovered is a feature in the external video used in the Dock,
- the MiniDock, and the Powerbook 160 and 180. The external video drivers
- on these machines support a "PowerSelect" call which is sent by the
- Powerbook Display Control Panel's dimming controller. So, when the
- Powerbook decides to dim its internal LCD, you'll also see the external
- video turn off. (If you decide you don't like this feature, just check the
- "Don't dim when plugged in" checkbox. (You are plugged in, right?))
-
- So when this call is sent out, the external video circuitry is literally
- powered down. The controller is turned off and video ram contents are
- lost. The monitor itself is still powered, but it's no longer being driven,
- and all you should see is a black screen. And it should be solid black--
- no grey banding or horizontal lines are expected. When you "undim"
- the monitor, you may see some interesting patterns as it powers on
- the video circuitry and restores the video ram.
-
- If you're saying that you're seeing the horizontal patterns and grey
- band while the video is powered off, then I'd guess you have a problem
- of some sort. If you're seeing those symptoms after moving the mouse,
- then you can probably attribute those actions to normal behavior for
- the video mode you're in on that monitor. What does your screen look
- like when it's 100% black?
