- I got a StyleWriter II this weekend and have now printed about 20 pages on
- it (using TrueType, not ATM). My impressions:
- - it's fast compared to my old ImageWriter II
- - its footprint is small if you leave the output paper tray stowed
- (and let the paper fall onto the floor), but with the paper tray extended
- it's footprint is similar to a DeskJet
- - it can auto-load envelopes or paper, but not both;
- it's not easy to manually just one envelope, say
- - only one switch: power on; it uses software to clean the print-head
- - It has a soft power-on switch (bad for us PowerKey users)
- - uncovered input paper tray exposes the paper to dust (like the original)
- - it can print near the edge of the paper (maybe 1/4", I didn't measure it)
-
- I'm sorry I can't compare it carefully to the old stylewriter, as I don't
- have access to one. I'd have bought a DeskJet instead because I prefer its
- paper handling and longer warrenty, but I didn't have any choice and the
- StyleWriter also has a lot going for it (Apple-written print drivers,
- better resolution).
-
- Two problems:
- 1) the installer damaged my system files and disk! Fortunately, replacing
- all the system files and inits and running Norton Utilities seems to have
- fixed the problem. I probably should have booted with all extensions turned
- off before running the installer, but in any case Apple's installer is
- dangerous.
- 2) print is larger than with the ImageWriter II. I suspect this is a
- problem with the IW II, not the StyleWriter, as I also had discrepancies
- between the IW II and laser printers. I haven't tested the match between
- laser printer and StyleWriter.
