  13. First off, may I say that my old Stylewriter was a piece of crap. Sorry,
  14. Apple but as much as I love your computers and other printers, the
  15. Stylewriter just doesn't fit in the 'quality' catagory.

  17. Well, needless to say, it died last night so I went out hunting for an
  18. HP DeskWriter. After about 18 phone calls to local and mail order
  19. places, I finally found one at a local Sears in New Brunswick (the last
  20. one). I quickly hooked it up and installed the drivers, happily deleting
  21. the Stylewriter drivers. The first thing I did was print my Startup
  22. Disk's window. The printer started to print it correctly, but half way
  23. through printing the name of the disk, the DW decided to print random
  24. characters, as if it lost its 'print graphics characters' flag (I don't
  25. know the tech. term, but you know what I mean). A whole stream of random
  26. characters. I tried printing the desktop. Same thing. Then I tried
  27. printing Word documents. No problem. Graphics files. No problem. Tried
  28. the desktop again. No go. Took a snapshot of the desktop and printed
  29. THAT. No problem. I removed ALL my inits and cdevs except the DW stuff
  30. and restarted the Mac. Now the desktop and startup disk printing worked.
  31. Brought all the inits, etc. back (using Startup Manager-NOW 4.0). Tried
  32. to print the desktop and disk in both normal AND best mode. FINE!

  34. Maybe I have a flaky cable, but I doubt it. I'm going to try other
  35. things, but I found that it only happens when printing from System 7
  36. Finder directly. If anyone else has had this problem, please TELL ME!

  38. Other than that, I think the thing is absolutely great. It prints fast,
  39. has a semi-intelligent Print Monitor (compared to the no-brained Apple
  40. one), and has very nice greyscale output. I highly recommend this puppy
  41. to anyone, but I still want to know why that problem arose. Please
  42. e-mail comments/suggestions.
