- First off, may I say that my old Stylewriter was a piece of crap. Sorry,
- Apple but as much as I love your computers and other printers, the
- Stylewriter just doesn't fit in the 'quality' catagory.
-
- Well, needless to say, it died last night so I went out hunting for an
- HP DeskWriter. After about 18 phone calls to local and mail order
- places, I finally found one at a local Sears in New Brunswick (the last
- one). I quickly hooked it up and installed the drivers, happily deleting
- the Stylewriter drivers. The first thing I did was print my Startup
- Disk's window. The printer started to print it correctly, but half way
- through printing the name of the disk, the DW decided to print random
- characters, as if it lost its 'print graphics characters' flag (I don't
- know the tech. term, but you know what I mean). A whole stream of random
- characters. I tried printing the desktop. Same thing. Then I tried
- printing Word documents. No problem. Graphics files. No problem. Tried
- the desktop again. No go. Took a snapshot of the desktop and printed
- THAT. No problem. I removed ALL my inits and cdevs except the DW stuff
- and restarted the Mac. Now the desktop and startup disk printing worked.
- Brought all the inits, etc. back (using Startup Manager-NOW 4.0). Tried
- to print the desktop and disk in both normal AND best mode. FINE!
-
- Maybe I have a flaky cable, but I doubt it. I'm going to try other
- things, but I found that it only happens when printing from System 7
- Finder directly. If anyone else has had this problem, please TELL ME!
-
- Other than that, I think the thing is absolutely great. It prints fast,
- has a semi-intelligent Print Monitor (compared to the no-brained Apple
- one), and has very nice greyscale output. I highly recommend this puppy
- to anyone, but I still want to know why that problem arose. Please
- e-mail comments/suggestions.
