- Apple Introduces 600-dpi Workgroup Printers for Macintosh and Windows
- Computer Users
-
- SAN FRANCISCO, California--January 6, 1993--Apple Computer, Inc.
- today introduced two new 600 dots-per-inch (dpi) workgroup laser
- printers that bring exceptional image quality to both Macintosh and
- Windows computer users. The Apple LaserWriter Pro 600 and Apple
- LaserWriter Pro 630 offer superior grayscale image quality, high-
- performance throughput, extensive paper handling capabilities, and
- ease of setup and use in Macintosh, Windows or mixed environments.
- The LaserWriter Pro 600 is designed for small and large business
- users with general productivity needs. The LaserWriter Pro 630 is a
- high-performance laser printer designed for small and large business
- users, as well as graphic design and desktop publishing
- professionals.
- "These are the highest-quality printers Apple has ever introduced,"
- said John Moon, Apple's vice president of Imaging Products. "We are
- bringing exceptional print quality, unparallelled ease of use, and
- technological breakthroughs to both Macintosh and Windows customers.
-
- LaserWriter Pro Series
- Both new laser printers are built on the Canon EX engine, which
- provides up to 600 dpi resolution and up to 8-page-per-minute
- throughput. A new, finer-grained toner--along with the capabilities
- of FinePrint, Apple's edge-smoothing technology--increases the detail
- that can be seen in text, lines and images printed on a LaserWriter
- Pro. Both printers are capable of near-photographic quality
- grayscale printing using PhotoGrade, Apple's sophisticated grayscale
- printing technology (standard on the 630, optional on the 600).
- PhotoGrade has been enhanced to provide 91 levels of gray, 30 percent
- more than was previously available in other printers. This means
- that even high-end graphics professionals can use the printers for
- proofing, and often final output.
- The LaserWriter Pro 600 and 630 are equipped with the latest version
- of Adobe's PostScript Level 2 software, the industry-standard page
- description language. They also come standard with PCL 4+ printer
- language for use with DOS computers. And, the printers offer more
- additional functionality for Macintosh users than other competitive
- printers because TrueType, Apple's font-scaling technology and Adobe
- Type 1 are both built into ROM. A total of 64 fonts (35 in ROM) are
- standard on both the 600 and 630.
-
- LaserWriter Pro 630
- The LaserWriter Pro 630 is designed for workgroup users in small and
- large businesses who need a high-performance printer with high-end
- imaging capabilities. It prints at 600 dpi resolution, or 300 dpi
- with PhotoGrade enabled for the best possible grayscale images. The
- printer is equipped with 8 megabytes (MB) of RAM, expandable to 32MB.
- There are two SCSI ports for an extra internal or external hard
- drive--or both--to make it easier and quicker to access additional
- fonts.
- Even with its more sophisticated graphics capabilities, the
- LaserWriter Pro 630 is as fast as its predecessor, the LaserWriter
- IIg. The combination of its 25MHz Motorola 68030 processor, custom
- chip technology, and high-speed, built-in EtherTalk port offers
- throughput that is at or above other 8 page per minute printers in
- its class.
-
- LaserWriter Pro 600
- The LaserWriter Pro 600 is a mainstream workgroup laser printer
- designed for customers seeking a cost-effective, high-volume printer.
- Also based on the 25MHz Motorola 68030 microprocessor, the 600 comes
- standard with 4MB of RAM, expandable to 32MB. In its standard
- configuration, the LaserWriter Pro 600 provides 300 dpi resolution
- with FinePrint. When upgraded to 8MB of RAM, the LaserWriter Pro 600
- prints at 600 dpi resolution or 300 dpi with PhotoGrade enabled for
- the best possible print quality. As a special introductory offer,
- Apple will ship the LaserWriter Pro 600 with 8MB of RAM, enabling
- users to take advantage of 600 dpi resolution and the superior
- grayscale printing capabilities of PhotoGrade.
- In addition to superior print quality, the LaserWriter Pro series
- provides the interfaces needed for high-performance, mixed-platform
- network use. The LaserWriter Pro 600 and 630 come equipped with an
- industry-standard Centronics parallel port, a serial port and
- LocalTalk. The 630 also has an EtherTalk port. These ports are
- simultaneously active, which allows departmental users with different
- CPUs to print text and graphics easily. There is no need to reset
- dip switches or send complex software commands to the printer.
-
- Versatile Paper Handling
- LaserWriter Pro printers provide the most versatile paper handling
- capabilities ever offered on an Apple printer. Two paper trays
- holding a total of 350 sheets of paper are standard. Users can
- switch automatically between the 100-sheet multipurpose tray that
- supports letter, legal, and A4 size paper, as well as envelopes and a
- 250-sheet tray at the touch of a button. Automatic switching enables
- a user to print the first page of a document on paper contained in
- one bin and the rest of the document from the second bin. Or, if the
- first bin should run out of paper, the printer will automatically
- switch to the next bin. Optional sheet feeders include a 500-sheet
- tray, which supports multiple paper sizes, and a 75-envelope feeder.
- Both the LaserWriter Pro 600 and 630 ship with a complete set of
- Windows 3.0 and 3.1 drivers from Apple. These drivers support the
- various print quality, paper-handling and memory capabilities
- available on the LaserWriter Pro printers.
-
- Pricing and Availability
- The LaserWriter Pro 600 and 630 printers will be available
- immediately through Apple authorized resellers worldwide.
- Manufacturer's suggested retail prices and availability may vary
- outside the United States.
