-
- I had the same problem with my SE/30. It would happen a few times a
- month, and all it required was a small jolt to the side of the computer.
- However, this didn't seem very safe to me, so I was quite releived when
- Apple announced it would fix all sticky SE/30 (and probably IIcx) hard
- drives for free.
-
- So, instead of backing up my drive and bringing it to the Apple dealer,
- I did nothing. One day, it stuck again, and a small jolt to the side of
- the computer did nothing. I tried again and again, and then decided to
- take a screwdriver, wrap the handle in a sock, and hit the computer a
- little harder. (I figured Apple would replace it for fre anyway, even
- if I broke it...)
-
- Of course, this didn't work either. Then, I had a brilliant idea.
- (Well, it sounded good at the time.) I had heard that the problem was
- some grease that accidentally hardens under some conditions, thereby
- not allowing the heads to unparkgrabbed a hair dryer, turned
- it on to its lowest setting, and aimed it right at the hard drive.
- After a few seconds, I turned the machine on, and the hard disk
- spun right up.
-
- I immediately backed everything up, cut class, and drove the computer
- down to the Apple dealer. They replaced the drive for free and now my
- computer is in perfect shape. (Except for one little problem: it isn't
- a NeXT.)
-
- Your mileage may vary. Just because I did it doesn't mean it's a
- good idea. In fact, if I did it, it must have been a bad idea.
