  29. Well, while the idea hereis correct, I thinkthe motivation is
  30. a bit off.

  32. It's not apple is concerned about users complaining about 
  33. differences in drive size. Rather, they are concerned with
  34. being able to repair the drives.

  36. Suppose you had an "80 meg drive" that failed. You send it back to
  37. apple (or your local service agent) and they find the drive is shot, and
  38. just go ahead and replace it. Now you go to restore your backup (you are
  39. afterall a wise user who keeps backups) only to find that the
  40. backed'up contents of your old drive are too big to fit
  41. on the new drive.

  43. This is why apple formats all drives in a given range to the
  44. lowest -common-denominator size for the range.
