- I have been using 4 x 4Mb SIMMs in my Mac IIsi for about
- half a year, and had no problems until a few weeks ago.
- However, it now appears to me that the SIMMs somehow interfere
- with the built-in video during usage of some new applications.
- The DirectTeX previewer (DVIReader 1.2) and a game called
- Dutil's & Plunkett's Jack (a "5-in-a-row" game) produce a
- vertically translating ``LuxaFlex pattern'' in their window
- while they are updating it.
- It is not a dramatic effect, but still clearly distinguishable.
- The really weird thing is that the CPU (not the monitor)
- produces a sharp whizz (at low volume) precisely during the period
- in which the abovementioned applications modify their
- window's contents. Really, I'm not imagining things !
-
- It happens in any mode of the built-in video (black&white
- as well as 256 colors).
- It cannot be caused by a defect in the motherboard,
- because a new board with my 4Mb SIMMs behaved the same.
- Replacing the 4Mb SIMMs with to the original 256 Kb (and using
- virtual memory) however did remove the problem.
- So I suspect the 4Mb SIMMs.
-
- They are labeled as:
- NEC Japan 424100 - 70L
- and serial (??) numbers: 9209VU02*, where * is one
- of 1,3,7. They were sold to me as being 4Mx8, 70ns SIMMs
- suitable for a Mac IIsi.
- Each contains 8 chips, and one empty spot.
-
- Have you ever heard of such IIsi video/SIMM problems ?
- Is there a way to make sure what the cause is ?
- I would like to be sure before I complain to the company
- which sold me the SIMMs.
-
- Thank you very much in advance for any information !
- Greetings,
- Fred.
