- That's kind of a personal decision. Buy a color printer and use it
- just for B&W and you've spent a little extra money. On the other
- hand, if you ever *want* to print in color you can.

- The major difference is that the 550C keeps both a black and a color
- ink cartridge available at all times. This means that color documents
- can have really good blacks. The 500C makes black by combining the
- three primaries. That makes it slower and the blacks less than
- perfect.

- BTW, the 500C requires you to switch between the two cartridges
- manually. This is relatively quick and completely clean. And the
- printer driver tells you if the document needs color and the black
- cartridge is installed.

- I kinda doubt it. The DeskWriter uses some pretty clever software on
- the Mac and the printer sides. It compresses the data going to the
- printer to give improved throughput over what a DeskJet can do.
