- I have a LAPIS COLORSERVER PDS30-14 in my SE/30. Currently it drives
- my Apple Portrait Display (APD) in 16 gray-levels. I also tried it
- with a color monitor and it works great. I am satisfied with the ColorServer,
- though not completely (see below). However, I don't know how much
- better an XCEED card would be.
-
- With LAPIS you have a choice of ColorServer PDS30 cards, each with its
- own features and price lable. Some are fixed for one type of monitor,
- others are "programmable". The programmable ones cover different
- ranges of monitor types. Mine would do the Apple 13" at 8 bits/pixel
- and the APD at 4 bits/pixel. It also has a connector for VGA monitors
- (but you need to open the SE/30 to install it in place of the Apple
- type connector, since you can install only one connector at a time).
-
- Comments: The image produced by the ColorServer on my APD is not as
- good as that produced by a II-si (I tried my monitor on both
- machines). At least part of the problem is universal: the SE/30
- radiates into the second monitor (and the interface card), so the
- second monitor should be sufficiently far away from the SE/30 (on the
- other hand, for dual-screen operation, you want to keep them close
- together; N.B. I like the dual-screen operation and exploit it a lot).
-
- When you put the menu bar on the second screen, you will not see your
- init icons at system start-up. Switching "menu-bar" screen requires a
- restart, as does a change of resolution for the programmable cards.
-
- Again, I don't know how other cards fare in these respects.
