- CL> I have had an internal APS Quantum ProDrive 105 in my Mac IIcx for
- CL> about 2.5 years.........
- CL> BASIC PROBLEM: When I boot up the Mac after several hours of
- CL> inactivity, the Mac refuses to boot up from the hard drive and
- CL> simply displays the 'happy mac' and stops. Hitting the reset button
- CL> to reboot doesn't solve the problem, I must physically turn the Mac
- CL> off and on.
- CL>
- CL> OBSERVATIONS: 1) THis problem ONLY occurs after the Mac has been
- CL> off for a few hours. 2) When I turn it on after it's been off for a
- CL> while, nothing happens,
- CL> then there is an obvious 'click' sound and the hard drive
- CL> starts
- CL> spinning. If the Mac was recently used, the hard drive has a
- CL> smooth
- CL> spin-up sound.
- CL>
- .......... Even though the ability of the drive to spin
- CL> up quickly seemed to depend on how long ago the Mac was last turned
- CL> off, APS strongly doubts that it's a drive sticking problem because
- CL> my serial number isn't among those that Quantum reported problems
- CL> with.

- Although APS strongly doubts that it's a drive sticking problem because my
- serial number isn't among those that Quantum reported problems with, I strongly
- believe it is a sticking problem; it can happen to any drive.
- You _MIGHT_ want to try this: Next time the problem occurs, turn off the CPU,
- open the case, turn on the power, then strike the center top of the harddrive
- relatively hard (Hopefully, the floppy drive is not in the way on a cx). If it
- starts up, its a stickin problem. (Try a few times) Of course, you have a very
- upto date backup so there is little danger to your data in trying this. Good
- Luck.
