- I apologize for re-entering this issue, but since I have been out of town, I
- felt that it was appropriate for an "official" responce.
-
- One of the longest standing complaints about StuffIt (Lite/Deluxe, etc.) is
- that it is MUCH larger disk and RAM footprint than Compact Pro, and that
- some don't see what they gain for that extra overhead.
-
- Well, let me see if I can explain what you get...
-
- 1) More features. StuffIt 3.0 offers a number of features that CP does not
- and that many of our users find important and in some cases "unlivable without".
- Some of these features include the ability to open multiple archives at the
- same time, copy & move files within and between archives, create exportable
- encrypted archives (and SEA's), adding files based on "match criteria". Also
- in Deluxe you get the ability to view the contents of files w/o expanding them
- first (and using another application).
-
- 2) Support of Apple Technology. StuffIt 3.0 was the first shipping application
- to take advantage of Apple technology including Apple events/AppleScript,
- WorldScript, Easy Open, and more. We have also been demonstrating support
- for OCE since last May. You can bet that as Apple releases new things, we'l
- be there with proper support.
-
- 3) Multi-format support. Whereas CP only support it's own formats, BinHex
- (though not fully to spec) and StuffIt 1.5.1, StuffIt Lite also supports
- StuffIt 2.0 & 3.0 formats, MacBinary, Disk Doubler, PackIt, and AppleLink
- Package files. StuffIt Deluxe adds the ability to handle PC formats such as
- ARC & ZIP, as well as common Unix formats like Compres, Tar, UUCode, etc. To
- quote MacUser, "If StuffIt Deluxe can't expand it, it probably isn't worth
- having."

- Onto a different, though related subject, someone else commented that because
- of all our recent updates that StuffIt is not stable - that is FAR from the
- truth. Sure we fixed bugs, but let me give y'all some ideas as to why there
- were each version.
-
- StuffIt Lite 3.0 - first release
- StuffIt 3.0.1 - bug fixes and initial Deluxe release
- StuffIt 3.0.2 - minor fixes to coincide with SpaceSaver 1.0.1 update
- StuffIt 3.0.3 - MANY new features, plus support for WorldScript
- StuffIt 3.0.4 - fixes (and support for) Easy Open
-
-
- I agree that we've had a few too many updates in a very short period of time,
- and you will (hopefully ;) not see any new minor ones for a while. However,
- we felt that the work we have/had done in order to improve your usage of our
- products was worth the time to produce and make the updates available.
