- There once was a time when if you wanted UNIX, you typically purchased
- a machine based upon a member of the Motorola MC680X0 family. Our
- first machine was a 68010, followed by a 68030, then with a 68040 which
- we still presently have. I have found all to be excellent processors
- and was looking forward to a 68060. I now have reason to believe that
- there will be no such beast. This certainly would be a great pity to
- see Intel survive and Motorola fail. A great pity indeed!
-
- The reason for my dismal expectations is that I hear that Motorola will
- not be releasing System V Release 4 for the 680X0 family. The only
- reasonable conclusion that this leaves is that there will be *NO* future
- processors in the 680X0 family and that Motorola has, at least internally,
- admitted defeat to Intel (yuch!), at least in CISC processors.
-
- Can anyone shed any light on this? Like I said earlier, I was looking
- forward to SVR4 and a 68060. I might consider switching to a 88K based
- platform if I felt assured that Motorola was not going to call it quits
- on these as well.
-
- Thanks, Steve
