- I seem to have come across a bug related to pkzip 2.04c.
-
- The problem:
- ===========
- Using Norton Desktop 2.0...I run a dos session (full screen) of Norton
- Commander 3.0. I then run
- PKZIP TEST.ZIP *.*
- After pkzip completes the requested task...it kicks me back into the Norton
- Desktop environment (instead of leaving me in Norton Commander). If I then try
- to run any applications I get a "out of memory" message. Upon exiting windows
- (version 3.1) the system locks up and the DOS prompt is never seen.
-
- Similarly if I run a full screen DOS session under windows and run a
- PKZIP TEST *.* I do not get kicked back into Windows 3.1. If I keep repeating
- the pkzip command I sometimes get "out of memory". Other times I get no e
- rror messages. However, when I try to exit Windows later, the system locks
- up and I do not get the DOS prompt.
-
- A POWER (COLD) BOOT is the only way to reset the system.
-
- NOTE:
- NO PROBLEMS NOTED WHEN RUNNING A REGULAR (VANILLA) DOS SESSION. (no windows)
-
- CAUSE:
- ======
- When I disable the 386/486 instruction features and run...
- PKZIP -3 TEST.ZIP *.*
-
- ...ALL of my problems mentioned above go away!
-
- It appears to be a bug related to the advanced memory/chip features that
- PKZIP 2.04c uses to enhance performance.
-
- I did not know PKWARE's e-mail address...I would appreciate if someone would
- forward this message to them (please post so the rest of us know!)
-
- THanks,
- Santosh
-
- p.s. HARDWARE : 486DX 33 w/4 meg RAM, 220Meg disk, Hercules monochrome graphics
- 2 serial. 2 parallel, 1 game port
