- I downloaded a letter last fall (around October ? ) that was supposedly
- posted from some hacker group in the California area. I still have this
- post if you are interested. It described a virus that was supposedly
- embedded in a hacked version 3.05 of PKunzip. The virus, according to
- the post, was supposed to hide in VGA RAM, com port buffer, printer buffers,
- disk drive buffer, and any other RAM that it could find that would allow it
- to elude existing detection schemes. The guy writing the letter said
- he had lost over 200MB of data due to the virus, and that none of his
- virus-detection/protection programs were of any help.
-
- I contacted PKware about this as well at the time, and posted several bulletins
- on several newsgroups. I also asked around the country to some friends of
- mine who use the Internet and are heavily involved in tele-communications.
- All of these sources either dismissed the "virus" and the post I have a
- copy of as a rumor, and claimed that such a virus could not possibly exist.
- This is the first I have heard of an actual case from this program (besides
- the post I have).
-
- If you would like, I can e-mail you a copy of that post. If anyone else
- would like it, e-mail me, and if there is sufficient interest, I will
- re-post it here.
