- )Simple. Your boot disk should have a jumper on it set to the "master"
- )position. Your other disk should have a jumper set to the "slave"
- )position. They might not be marked as such. Consult your drive's
- )docs or contact the manufacturer. I know that Seagate has an
- )automated information service on their phone number - just key in the
- )drive model (from a touch-tone phone) and listen for all the specs on
- )it. Once you set the jumpers, you're done.
- )
- )Don't assume that your old drive is already a "master" drive. Some
- )drives have a third jumper position for "stand-alone" operation. Your
- )new drive will almost certainly NOT be in the slave position.
-
- I believe the jumper configuration is stranger than that. According to
- the docs I got from seagate (they're from the BBS, hard to read, but I
- think I got them right), the master drive should have master+slave jumpers,
- and the slave drive should have *no* jumpers. [Interpretation guide -
- the thing that looks like a D is really a _, and the thing that looks like
- a 3 is really a |.] I.e. master has 3-4 short AND 5-6 short, slave
- has no short, 1 drive has 3-4 short only.

- Anyway, it worked for me.
-
- PS - I think it's totally disgusting that the drives do not ship with
- this doc, and the newer drive (a 3144A) didn't even have the labels on
- the motherboard the way the 1144a I had did. Very poor policy, IMO.

-
- Check out the 'remote LED jumper' on the *DRIVE* as above. (That was my
- problem). [May need another jumper as well on the controller, but you
- also need to set a jumper on the *drive*.). 9-10 on the segate model I
- have.
