- Sorry for the missing stuff (it's hard getting the brain in gear...
- and keeping it there after the hollydays)...
-
- Anyway... I was only talking about the system outside of the CPU and
- external cache. In the case of a huge memory search from cacheable
- memory, then you want to have the fastest memory possible since the
- cache is not going to do much good (it will be trashing). In the case
- of video accesses, the cache does play a role iff you have the
- BIOS/driver cached (like under Windows, OS/2, etc.), but if the video
- is out on a slower local bus then the 486 cache may still not mean too
- much since the driver might be staled waiting for back-to-back video
- accesses to finish.
-
- The ideal test would be to figure out your most typical activity which
- takes a painful amount of time and see which system is better.
- Barring this, your next bet is to look over the various magazine
- benchmarks for something which comes close and trust it. You can also
- buy one of the system benchmark packages which best matches your needs
- (it should show system performance... a windows system, NOT just
- video, benchmark is good if you use windows apps) and go to the dealer
- and ask if you can run it (protect your disks from viruses). The last
- suggestion on the list is to trust a dealer for the results.
