- This is a request for help. We have encountered the following problem we
- are not able to solve: We use 50 MHz 486 EISA computer with SCO UNIX V
- Release 3.2 Ver 4.1. The hard disk (SCSI-2) is connected through EISA
- adapter Adaptec AHA-1742A.
-
- Everything worked fine until we tried to connect streamer unit (QIC
- streamer Wangtek 5150 ES). Unfortunately, this attempt was not succesful.
- We can move the tape (via 'tape' command) and even write backup (cpio,
- tar). But, any attempt to *READ* the tape hangs the SCSI adapter. After
- short movement of the tape the diagnostic LED on the adapter lights on
- and remains so and any device connected to the SCSI adapter becomes
- unavailable until the computer is reset.
-
- We made several experiments, using also simplier ISA SCSI adapter
- Adaptec 1542B, which we had available. We can summarize the results
- as follows:
-
- 1. Adaptec 1742 hangs in both enhanced and standard (1542-emulating)
- mode.
-
- 2. If we replace 1742 by Adaptec 1542, everything works fine. (I guess
- this proves that the problem is not in the SW, because the drivers are
- exactly same as with 1742 in standard mode).
-
- 3. If we use both adapters, the HD connected to 1542 and the tape to 1742,
- an attempt to read the tape blocks the task which tried it, but the
- rest of the UNIX system continues to run without problem. The blocked
- task cannot be terminated.
-
- 4. We thought there might be a problem between SCSI-1 (tape) and SCSI-2
- (HD and Adaptec 1742). We tried to connect insted of the tape another
- HD (SCSI-1), but this worked without problems.
-
- 5. Having two similar machines we tried to swap Adaptec 1742 adapters
- and Wangtek streamers. The problem occured with any of the adapters
- and streamers - it is not simply one bad piece of hardware.
-
- Please, if you have any ideas or suggestions how to solve this problem,
- post them to this group or directly to my e-mail address.
-
- Thanx, V. Lieberzeit
-
-
- P.S. BTW, we had also problems with EISA configuration program from
- AMI. When saving the configuration of Adaptec-1742 slot, the program
- hangs. It does so even when run in "remote" mode on other computer,
- saving the configuration only to file (which IMHO means, that the problem
- is in the SW). According to our experiments the problem is in the overlay
- file supplied by the Adaptec (ADP0000.OVR). Have any of you experienced
- this problem ?
