- I would agree on Bane - I found it very disappointing. Excellent user
- interface, but dire game play. This is reflected in the manual, which
- has over 100 pages on the mechanics of the game, but only one page on
- the scenario. The initial castle scenario is utter tedium, the majority
- of the plotting involving finding which of a multitude of keys fit a
- multitude of doors, and wandering around a mess of twisty little
- passages all the same - b-o-o-o-ring! What really finished it for me was
- that, on getting out of the castle into the gorge and Giant Mountain
- area, and expecting some different scenery, at least, all I got was more
- twisty little passages all the same, and more flaming locked doors with
- no keys. I persevered for a few more days, but then gave up, and haven't
- felt any inclination to go back to it.
- I'm a great Might & Magic fan myself, particularly III (I haven't got
- Clouds of Xeen yet). I find the numerous mini-quests help to keep your
- interest going when you'd otherwise be stuck and not sure what to do
- next, and the game's graphics really help to promote the idea of being
- in another world: roads to travel, towns to visit, rivers to swim,
- mountains to climb, dungeons, castles, swamps, sea voyages ... all
- imaginatively depicted.
- The Ultima games are good as well, but I've never been too happy with the
- bird's eye view - and I liked Elvira, Mistress of the Dark (does that
- count as RPG?), although I found the gore rather put me off after a
- while, and would have preferred it with a 'squeamish' option.
- Megatraveller 2 is worth a look, if you're into massive complexity - I
- haven't plucked up the courage yet to make a real effort at playing it,
- though.
- Of course, there isn't actually any such thing as a computer
- role-playing game, anyway ... but there's some fairly entertaining
- software which goes under that guise.
