- The flight-sim feature list isn't the draw here. Five years ago the
- flight model was - well - sureal. Physics didn't exist. Yet people
- played and played hard.
-
- There are aspects of the online environment which are impossible
- to capture in the head-to-head arena. With 50 planes up, you can
- expect 2/3 of them to be trying to kill you. This is a much more
- complex mental problem than a 1-1 duel. Simply getting to and from
- a fight requires one to visualize and assess all the threats along
- the path. And these threats are weighted by plane type, altitude,
- fuel & ammo state, and knowing who else is flying at the time.
-
- Then there is the teamwork aspect. While a good 1-1 dueler can handle
- most comers in AW, he will generally die without scoring a single hit
- when attacked by a pair of other players who understand teamwork.
- Sure - 2:1 isn't "fair" - big deal. But, by the same token, a single
- player who understands the use of altitude and energy can attack and
- defeat (or at least annoy the hell out of) a force many times his
- size. Again, this is something you don't get from the head-to-head
- stuff.
-
- And there is the role-playing aspect of the game. Actually, there
- are two role-playing aspects online. One is your role within the
- group of people you fly with. People generally gravitate to what
- they're best at - be it leader, wingman, solo dogfighter, dive bomber,
- or whatever. Then there is the persona role-playing. The forces of
- Good and Evil are alive and well in the online AW world.
