- Subject: *WEIRD* floppy drive error...
-
- I'm wondering if anyone has ever run into this problem before, and if
- so, has anyone ever found a solution: In the last three weeks, three
- PC's -- a pair of 486SX machines and a 286 -- have come into our repair
- shop with an identical problem. The 3.5"/1.44 meg drive will not read
- high-density disks. It reads 720K disks without a problem. It reads
- 1.44M disks, but only when they are write-protected. If not, the drive
- will crap out ("GENERAL FAILURE READING DRIVE A:", etc.), and the FAT
- and BOOT sectors of the disk are destroyed (interestingly, ViruSafe
- reports that the disks are infected with Michelangelo, although they
- are most certainly not).
-
- What seems to be happening is that every time the drive attempts to
- access a 1.44M disk, it first performs a write operation somewhere in
- FAT and BOOT area, rendering the disk unreadable. When the disk is
- write-protected, the write operation fails and things carry on as
- usual, except that a floppy isn't much good if you can't write to it.
-
- I am convinced this is a motherboard problem. I've switched out the
- drive, the cable, the controller, the hard drive, the CPU, and the RAM.
- The power supply connections all tested OK. Nothing works, and what's
- more, *ALL* of these parts work fine in another motherboard (including
- the drive). I've even tried replacing the oscillator on one of the
- boards: nada. Anyone got any suggestions?
-
- Thanks,
- -- John

-
- 1- A 486DX has a complete math coprocessor built into it.
-
- 2- A 486SX is a 32bit CPU with no math coprocessor.
-
- 3- A 486DX2 is an OEM product and can not be bought by end
- users It is bought and instaled by manufacturers.
-
- 4- An overdrive chip is any chip that provides clock doubling
- to any kind of 486XX. That means you can buy an overdrive for a 486SX
- and you will get a complete 486 chip with clock doubling and
- installation programm + chip puller from Intel.
-
- 5- The sockets found on many 486 are for Weitek math
- coprocessors which are a special kind of math copros. You can't install
- an Overdrive chip in that socket because the pinout is not the same.
-
- 6- Intel is not selling 487SX chips anymore because they prefer
- selling Overdrive chips instead.
-
- If anyone is interested in more information on those chips, I have

- information. Just E-mail to gel44@gel.ulaval.ca

-
- I have just finished the new version of BIGSORT, which allows you to
- sort files as large as your, well, paging disk!
-
- Version 4 is a major rewrite, and I hope I did not introduce any bugs
- by re-writing almost the whole thing.
-
- New Features
- * Country codepage support. It uses the defined primary codepage to
- do its sorting. Verbose option displays the collating sequence for
- your country.
-
- * Multiple sort fields support. You can define up to 20 fields to
- sort on. They are prioritised in the order you define them. Each field
- can have different sort options.
-
- * /Delimiter option allows you to specify if the date field uses
- slashes, dashes or nothing (like yyyymmdd).
-
- * Online help now shows several usage examples.
-
- Limitations:
- * Requires OS/2 2.0 since it's a 32-bit application.
- * It is still not freeware. Registration is $20.
-
- Availability:
- * From ftp-os2.nmsu.edu, currently in /pub/uploads directory, to be
- placed into (probably) /pub/os2/2.0/sysutils

-
- When you do an alt-drag to the desktop, it applies that scheme to
- everything which has NOT had a specific scheme dragged to it. If you
- turn one folder blue, for example, then alt-drag the red to the
- desktop, everything BUT the blue folder will turn red. Obviously, at
- some time in the past, you dragged a scheme to the desktop alone, and
- now it has its 'this folder has been specifically fiddled with' bit set

-
- I'm not real OS/2 knowledgable, but - I've put together lots and lots
- of PC type machines with most types of disk under the sun.
-
- You want a 1:1 interleave for best performance, assuming you have a
- decent disk controller board for most disks. You only get to screw
- with the interleave factor when you do a low level format of the drive.
-
- With IDE, my understanding is that you don't want to redo the low level
- format of the drive, for these reasons:
-
- With the controller on the drive (IDE), you may not be able to
- see the real drive geometry.
-
- How you do the low level format is very specific to the drives
- geometry. Low level formats involve setting the track to track offsets
- in addition to the interleasve factor. Also, this usually lets you
- specify the number of sectors / track, which may or may not include
- "spare sectoring", depending on whether your controller will support
- it.
-
- Anyway, you get the idea. Now, why are you trying to specify your own
- choice of interleave for an IDE drive? I'd suggest leaving it alone.

- INTRODUCTION
-
- The Microsoft MS-DOS CHKDSK and UNDELETE commands dated 04/09/91, which
- are included in the Microsoft MS-DOS 5 Upgrade, do not work correctly
- on logical drives that require 256 sectors to store each copy of the
- file allocation table (FAT). If any of the partitions on your hard disk
- drive are within the ranges listed in the following section and you do
- not have version 5.0a of the Microsoft MS-DOS 5 Upgrade, which includes
- CHKDSK.EXE and UNDELETE.EXE files dated 11/11/91, install the updated
- CHKDSK.EXE and UNDELETE.EXE files included with this application note.
-
- If your FAT occupies 256 sectors, using the CHKDSK.EXE file dated
- 04/09/91 with the /f parameter ("chkdsk /f" [without the quotation
- marks]) can result in data loss. Using the UNDELETE.EXE file dated
- 04/09/91 can lead to unpredictable results.
-
- DETERMINING IF YOU NEED TO INSTALL THE UPDATED FILES
-
- Drives require a 256-sector FAT if they have partitions within the size
- ranges listed below. Because the potential problems are serious, these
- ranges include a margin of safety.
-
- 127 MB-129 MB
- 254 MB-258 MB
- 508 MB-516 MB
- 1018 MB-1030 MB
- 2035 MB-2061 MB
-
- You can use the Fdisk program to determine if you have a 256-sector FAT
- with the following procedure:
-
- 1. At the MS-DOS command prompt, type the following and press the ENTER
- key:
-
- fdisk
-
- 2. Press 4 on the keyboard to select the Display Partition Information
- option and press ENTER.
-
- 3. The primary partition size is listed under the Mbytes heading. If
- the size falls within any of the ranges specified above, install the
- updated CHKDSK.EXE and UNDELETE.EXE files on the enclosed PD0646 disk.
-
- 4. If you have an extended partition, press the ENTER key to view those
- partition sizes. If any of the extended partition sizes listed under
- the Mbytes heading fall within the ranges specified above, install the
- CHKDSK.EXE and UNDELETE.EXE files on the enclosed PD0646 disk.
-
- 5. Press the ESC key twice to exit to the MS-DOS command prompt.
-
- TO REPLACE YOUR CHKDSK.EXE AND UNDELETE.EXE FILES
-
- 1. Insert the enclosed PD0646 disk in your floppy disk drive.
-
- 2. At the MS-DOS command prompt, type the following lines, pressing
- ENTER after each line
-
- copy drive:\chkdsk.exe destination
- copy drive:\undelete.exe destination
-
- where "drive" is the floppy disk drive containing the PD0646 disk
- and "destination" is the drive and directory where your CHKDSK.EXE and
- UNDELETE.EXE files currently reside. For example, if CHKDSK.EXE and
- UNDELETE.EXE are located in the DOS directory on drive C and the PD0646
- disk is in drive A, you would type the following commands:
-
- copy a:\chkdsk.exe c:\dos
- copy a:\undelete.exe c:\dos

- The floppy format of this special notebook (that can display not only

-
- Another solution would be a serial cable (null modem) but even the
- serial port doesn't seem to be standard RS-232. It's a female connector

-
- I used Gammatech to recover files from a corrupted HPFS Volume.
- It was so badly corrupted that booting from OS/2 boot floppy and
- running chkdisk only resulted in OS/2 being unable to find the C:
- partition. But Gammatech found the Volume, Files, and recovered them!
-
- This product does work
-
- I might also mention that, I had the 16bit version, and had not
- upgraded it until the above problem occured, All I did was call
- GammaTech, and talk to Benny Ormson (President), and He asked for my
- invoice number, said that I qualified for the free upgrade, and he
- would drop it in the mail that day. He also allowed me to Dial in
- (Modem) and DL the HPFS recover Utility that day, so we wouldn't have
- to wait for the mail!
-
- This is Service! I can't remember the last time a software
- Vendor did this for a small customer. Here is a company that supports
- OS/2 and really supports OS/2 Users

- From: SchwartzM at dockmaster.nscs.mil (Marc Schwartz)
-
- In two recent postings on INFO-IBMPC there were requests for hard drive
- specs on Seagate hard drives. One was for an older ST4096 MFM drive,
- the other for ST4766 SCSI. While I do not have those specs, there is a
- telephone number for Seagate Tech Support that can provide either via
- human interface or via electronic menus, the specs for all Seagate and
- the old Control Data Wren and Imprimis (now Seagate) hard drives.
-
- The number is: (408)-438-8222. It is available 24 hours, 7 days a
- week.
-
- Hoe that this helps those folks and others who may need this info.
- This has been an invaluable resource for me.

- Shalom;

- I am looking for two things and I hope someone can help me:
-
- 1) A ftp program which will insert a quote mark ">" in the beginning of
- each line in an ascii file. I would like this to work OFFLINE on my pc.
-
- 2) A electronic magazine or other such sorce on internet which new
- computer products are announced. I know of "new-prod", but it doesn't
- get alot of use. I can't believe that the computer companies don't want
- to exploit internet for such a service (or am I underestimating them
- :))

- Thanks !!!!

- Subject: Upgrading 386 PC from DOS 3.10 to DOS 5
-
- I have a friend that has a IBM-Clone 386SX. The 386 has a 103M hard
- disk and an operating system of DOS 3.10. I want to put DOS 5.0 onto
- his system; however when booting up to the drive A: with the system
- disk and attempting to transfer the System to the C: drive, I get the
- message...Invalid, Drive not available. The CMOS and the SCSI
- Controller won't allow me to boot to the Drive A: and when I go into
- the setup there is no allowance for booting a disk in Drive A:? I
- suggested to my friend that he back up his hard drive and we'll have to
- re-setup the hard disk the hard way....by removing the partition and
- logical drive setup, booting up on the A: drive and then transfering
- DOS 5.0 that way!
-
- My question is this....is this the only way to replace the operating
- system on a clone! Most other major vendor machines allow for the
- booting on the A: drive and the using of the SYS command to transfer an
- upgraded vers. of DOS? Is it the SCSI controller that won't allow the
- use of the A: drive? And what will happen if I remove his partition,
- if I can't boot on the A: drive? Will I be able to put DOS 5.0 on the
- partition newly re-created! A very perplexing setup!? Thank you for
- your assistance!

- The other day I discovered that a couple of files on my hard disk were

- happening, so that I can avoid them in the future.

- I've tried to use my Sony DR200-C Headphones with microphone with the
- Micrsoft's Windows Sound System but it didn't work.
-
- The Sony DR200-C has a microphone for also outside and inside use that
- has a 300omh (+-20%) impedance ans, connected to the board, it don't
- produced any effect, but it works with any other device such as
- Recorder. There is anybody that knows how to solve the mistery? The WSS
- manual says that the mike in sot compatible with the board but is it
- possible?
-
- Unfortunatly MS doesn't provide to say which is the caractheristc for
- his board (impedance, output power, ecc.), so i'm not able to solve the
- problem.
-
- Waiting for your aswer, i wish you an Happy New Year.
